Why do I need this medicine?
Aminocaproic acid helps to prevent and reduce bleeding. It is used to control bleeding in individuals with liver disease, bleeding disorders, and certain cancers such as prostate or lung cancer.

This medicine may also be used to control bleeding following surgery in the heart, liver, prostate or kidneys, particularly in people whose blood cannot clot properly or takes a longer time to clot.

Aminocaproic acid may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Aminocaproic acid exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food.

Aminocaproic acid is available as a tablet and oral solution or syrup.

If you are taking an oral syrup or solution, shake the bottle well before you take the medicine to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of treatment depending on your condition and response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have disseminated intravascular coagulation (a rare blood disorder that causes abnormal clotting in the blood vessels) as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

Do not take Aminocaproic acid with medicines that help the blood to form clots in certain bleeding disorders, such as factor IX complex and anti-inhibitor coagulant complex.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • heart disease
  • blood in the urine
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Routine tests (e.g. kidney function, blood clotting tests) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring for signs and symptoms of bleeding may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Aminocaproic acid may cause any of the following side effects: headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, watery eyes, ringing in the ears, and stuffy nose.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • persistent muscle or joint pain, muscle cramps or weakness, tiredness
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • frequent sore throat, mouth sores, fever, chills, or sweating
  • shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood
  • pain or difficulty in passing urine, change in how much urine is passed, blood in the urine
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Aminocaproic acid with medicines that help the blood to form clots in certain bleeding disorders, such as factor IX complex and anti-inhibitor coagulant complex.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking tretinoin (a medicine used for certain cancer of the blood).

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Do not freeze the oral solution or syrup.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
